Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use the 3D printer?

Everyone! All you need is an Orillia Public Library card in good standing. You’ll also need to complete the 3D Printer Orientation course. Check out our monthly program listings or ask staff for upcoming sessions! Customers who have completed the training may use the printer independently, and are responsible for the final result of their print jobs.

How much does it cost?

The cost is determined by the amount of filament (material) that goes in to creating your object. The cost is $2 per print plus $0.50 per meter of PLA filament as determined by the 3D printing software, Cura.

What can I print?

Anything! As long as it is appropriate for a Library setting, safe, and not in contravention of copyright law you can print just about anything! However, Library staff reserve the right to terminate any job for any reason, including inappropriate content or printing malfunctions.

Where can I find things to print?

Create your own designs or download them from websites such as:

Where can I learn more about 3D printing online?

Do you want to learn more about 3D printing and 3D modeling? Try one of the courses on! You can access for free with your Library card. Why not get started with the "Learning 3D Printing" course, or one of the many software specific 3D modeling courses available?

What file formats can I use?

We recommend using .STL files. While other types of files are possible to print, we use .STL whenever possible. If you want to use a different file type, check with Library staff first.

How big can my objects be?

The maximum build volume is 215 x 215 x 200 mm (8.5 x 8.5 x 7.9 in) and the maximum print time is 4 hours.

How do I book a time to use the printer?

You can book the printer for up to 4.5 hours at time. All prints must be completed at least 30 minutes before closing time. Contact us to reserve your timeslot.

What type of material does the printer use?

We use PLA filament, which is biodegradable. This is the most common type of filament currently in use for 3D printing.
